About NSS

National Service Scheme, Popularly known as NSS is an extension of activities to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in education institutions, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.
National Service Scheme was launched on 24th September, 1969 by the then Education Minister Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao in 37 universities with 40,000 NSS Volunteers covering all States.
The Motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme if “NOT ME BUT YOU”.

Aims & Objective of NSS are

  • To understand the community in which they work.
  • To gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  • To practice national integration and social Harmony.
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  • To understand themselves in relation to their community.
  • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
  • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  • To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.
  • To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problem.
  • To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.

Obligation for Nss Volunteer

To work for two continued years along with their studies, putting in 120 hours service each year and participating in one special camping Programme.

Total 240 hours social service in two years duration. Of which 20 hours for orientation course, 30 hour for campus work and remaining 70 hours for community services in a year. Further a seven-day special camp will be attended by the NSS Volunteer in the adopted village.

Activities under NSS

There are basically two types of activities under NSS

  • Regular Activities.
  • Special Campaign Activities.

Regular Activities

  • Celebration of all important days.
  • Orientation and Personality Development sessions.
  • Conducting Blood Donation, Medical and Health Camps.
  • Participation of students in various seminars and workshops conducted all over the country.
  • Plantation activities, cleanliness drives, plastic elimination campaign as well as seminars and workshops by eminent environmentalists are conducted.

Special Campaign Activities

  • Participation of students in various seminars and workshops conducted all over the country.
  • This is a residential program for 7 days were in the NSS Unit will adopt a village or a slum nearby their institutions.
  • They would conduct medical camps / blood donation camps and pulse polio campaigns during their special camp.
  • They would also help in construction of damaged roads, painting of school buildings, toilets etc during their special campaign program.
  • 49 Students and one program officer will stay in this village or slum and work with youth of that community. They would organize various awareness programs in the village on social issues. They would promote the various government polices to the public with their cultural activities.

Indira Gandhi NSS Award issued by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India conferred by the Hon’ble President of India.

STATE LEVEL
